“CHP Stops Overloaded Log Truck in Angels Camp for Safety Risks”

California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers intervened last Monday after discovering a log truck dangerously overloaded by thousands of pounds in Angels Camp. The May 13 incident began when local police requested CHP assistance for a commercial vehicle that appeared severely overweight and was noticeably leaning to one side.

According to the CHP Valley Division, officers confirmed the truck exceeded legal weight limits by alarming margins. “Our officer discovered the vehicle was over 8,000 pounds over its legal gross weight, and more than 15,000 pounds overweight on the rear axles,” the agency stated.

The inspection revealed structural concerns that posed immediate safety threats. Photos from the scene show the massive load of logs tilting dramatically, with the truck’s frame visibly stressed under the excessive weight.

Troopers immediately placed the commercial vehicle out of service. Such weight violations create significant hazards not just for the driver, but for everyone sharing the roadway.

“This is a powerful reminder of why commercial vehicle enforcement matters,” CHP officials said. “Overweight trucks can cause catastrophic collisions and long-term damage to our roads.”

The agency emphasized the preventative nature of such enforcement. By identifying the dangerous vehicle before an incident occurred, officers likely prevented a potential tragedy.

Commercial vehicle regulations establish weight limits based on axle configuration and vehicle design. Exceeding these limits compromises braking capability, vehicle stability, and increases stopping distances.

The CHP hasn’t released information about potential citations or the trucking company involved. Standard penalties for commercial weight violations typically include substantial fines calculated per pound over the legal limit.
