Truck Driver Uses Vice Grips to “Fix” Air Brake Issue, Faces Charges
A 76-year-old log truck driver and his employer are facing charges after attempting a dangerous DIY repair on a commercial vehicle with failing brakes. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported the incident occurred on Highway 11 near Atikokan.
Alert motorists first notified authorities when they spotted the fully loaded log truck throwing sparks across the highway. Many callers expressed concern that the wheels appeared ready to detach from the vehicle.
When officers intercepted the truck, they discovered a troubling situation. The vehicle had two damaged trailer tires and a disconnected air line to the spring brake chamber.
Even more alarming? The driver had noticed these major defects but chose to continue his journey anyway.
“The driver had proceeded to clamp the airline with vice grips in order to continue on without leaking too much air from the tank, posing an extreme risk to the motoring public,” stated OPP in their May 15 release.
Authorities immediately ordered the trailer out of service. Repairs had to be completed roadside before the vehicle could continue.
The Fort Frances driver now faces multiple charges, including improper brakes on a commercial motor vehicle and driving with a major defect. Meanwhile, his employer from Emo, Ontario has been charged with failing to ensure performance standards are met.
In their statement, OPP emphasized the critical importance of proper vehicle maintenance. “Proper inspections, repairs and maintenance of equipment is vital to ensure the safety of our roads in North Western Ontario,” police noted.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about commercial vehicle safety and the potential dangers when drivers attempt makeshift repairs rather than addressing serious mechanical issues properly.
